We were not made to sell safaris.
We were made to slow people down.

Overview

A letter from George Shango, Founder of Teva EcoTravels.

I grew up in Tanzania. Not in a city, exactly, in the kind of place where the line between town and bush is permeable. Where you walked to school past elephants that had come down from the mountain overnight. Where a leopard track in the dust was not unusual, just noteworthy. Where time was measured by light, not by clock.

I did not understand, then, how rare that childhood was. I did not understand that the rest of the world had begun to forget how to live this way, how to notice the small things, how to sit with a single tree for an hour, how to let the day arrive at its own pace.

I studied wildlife management at Sokoine University because I wanted to stay close to the animals I had loved since I was small. I went to Sweden for my Master's because someone told me I could study lions there in a way I couldn't at home. I spent eighteen months in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area collecting genetic samples from lions for my thesis. I thought I was going to become a scientist.

And then one day I was sitting on a kopje in the Serengeti, watching the sun rise, and a guest from Europe was sitting beside me. She had been quiet for almost an hour. When she finally spoke, she said: "I have not been still for this long in twelve years."

She did not say it as a complaint. She said it as a revelation. As if she had just rediscovered something she did not know she had lost.

That moment became the question that built Teva. What if a safari was not about how much wildlife you saw, but about how much of yourself you found? What if we slowed everything down, the driving, the looking, the talking, the wanting, until the land had a chance to actually reach the person inside the visitor?

Teva means nature, in Hebrew. The source. The origin. The place where everything begins. I chose this name because I believe nature is not an attraction to visit. It is a state we are meant to return to. Tanzania is one of the few places on earth where that return is still possible, where the wild is still wild enough, the cultures are still rooted enough, the pace is still patient enough to receive a tired traveller and gently give them back to themselves.

This is what we offer. Not a vacation. A reorientation.

Our three words, Discover, Experience, Connect, are not marketing language. They are a description of what actually happens, in sequence, when a journey is built and paced properly. And done well, those three words deliver something we never put on our tagline, but that every guest comes home with: a quiet, lasting change in how they see, how they slow down, how they live.

That change is the whole point. We just never say it out loud. We let it happen.

If you are reading this, I suspect you are looking for something similar. I would be honoured to be the one who helps you find it. We are a small company. We will probably stay that way. We do not run more than one safari at a time, because we cannot, every Teva journey requires our full attention. That is part of why it works.

Come slowly. Bring the version of yourself that is tired of going fast. We will be waiting.
